Piano theory for adult learners

Sniffs out the theory behind what you play.

Plug in your digital piano and play any chord. Harmony Hound tells you what it is, which key it belongs to and the job it's doing, so you understand your playing instead of memorising shapes.

Works with most USB digital pianos and keyboards. No piano? The on-screen keys work too.

How it works

Play first. The theory follows.

Most chord apps hand you a list of shapes to memorise. Harmony Hound listens to what your hands are already doing and explains it.

1

Plug in

Connect your digital piano with a USB cable, or use the on-screen keys on any device.

2

Play

Play any chord, in any inversion. Pedal as much as you like; the hound only listens to the keys you're holding.

3

See the theory

The chord's name, its numeral in the key, its inversion and its job, all colour-coded the same way on every screen.

What's inside

Understand, don't memorise.

Live theory mirror

Play on your real piano and watch every chord get named, numbered and explained as you play.

One colour language

Every scale degree has its own colour in every key, so patterns jump out before you know the names.

Keys & the circle of fifths

See how each key is built and why its seven chords belong together. Major and minor.

Games that stick

Name That Chord, Numbers Rush and Chord Drop turn theory into quick reflexes, on screen or on your piano.

Songs you know

The chord progressions behind real songs, and why they work.

Five minutes a day

A daily session with streaks and levels. Small, regular practice that adds up.

Why it exists
"I'm an adult piano learner. I could play chords, but I didn't understand why they went together, and every resource I found just wanted me to memorise more shapes. So I built the tool I wished existed: one that listens to what I play and explains it."
Andy, creator of Harmony Hound

Questions

Good questions.

Is it free?

Yes, during early access. Later there'll be a free version and an optional paid upgrade with extra content. Early access members will hear about it first.

Do I need a piano?

No. Everything works with the on-screen keys. A digital piano makes it much more fun, though, because you get the live theory mirror on real keys.

How much theory do I need to know?

If you can play a basic chord, you're ready. Harmony Hound starts with what you can already play and builds from there.

Is it an app or a website?

Both. It runs in your browser and can be installed to your home screen like an app. It works offline once installed.

What about my data?

There's no account to create. Your progress stays on your own device. We only ask for your email if you'd like early access and updates.

I'm a teacher / I'm learning with my child. Is it for me?

We'd love to hear from you. Pick that option when you sign up, so we can understand what you'd need.
